Soil fertility map at COP22

A presentation of the project " Fertility mapping of cultivated soils of Morocco" was made at the COP22, which took place in Marrakech, from 7 to 18 November, at the level of the OCP stand.

Soil inventory completed

The soil inventory was completed by carrying out additional pedagogical soil studies on areas that have not been studied in the past. This action targeted ten areas on approximately 1.9 million hectares. It was based on an approach integrating digital information: numerical model of altitude, digitalized lithological maps, derived occupation from satellite images, etc.

Transfer of experience in the context of South-South cooperation

The Moroccan model of the soil fertility map is currently shared with several African countries including Guinea Conakry, Guinea Bissau, Côte d'Ivoire and the Caribbean islands through "pilot" projects carried out by managers and technicians Of these countries in the context of South-South cooperation. Specific training sessions on local data, both in Morocco and in the countries concerned, have been provided to African technicians on all operations and stages of fertility maps realization since the collection of available basic data up to the realization of digital maps via soil sampling, laboratory analysis and their interpretation, and the development of the computer tool under GIS.
